Our beautiful Miss January 2012 is my ever adorable friend, Trish Blair with her unique and wonderful take on vintage, sewing and styling !!

What does Vintage mean to you?

Vintage means to me anything that’s from the70’s and older.

What was it that first prompted your interest in Vintage Culture?

My first brush with the 50’s came through my grandmother, she travelled to the states during that time. She always carried an old fashioned purse and a bamboo handled knitting bag and wore a coat with a brooch! She had the amazing Barsony style lamp in her home – It was a gorgeous lady in a canoe, with red and white shade – she gave me some lovely printed 50’s fabric – boats with moody colours – teal, black and purple and some jewellery that she bought there. I think since she died I have found myself drawn to 50’s things.

I have been shopping in op shops since I was a student (I studied Fashion Design) because it was very cheap – those days are gone! In Wellington, New Zealand where I grew up, there was a great local op shop that I would visit. From there I amassed had the most amazing handbag, hat and hatpin collection from the 50’s and 60’s. Unfortunately when I moved to Australia, with a suit case and my sewing machine in ’92, I had to leave it all behind.

Since moving to Sydney, I was invited to the 50’s fair for the first time back in 1998! I loved it and have gone pretty much every year since, even with a month old baby in a sling! This has really sparked my interest. We didn’t really have a rockabilly scene in Wellington (and anyway – I hung out with Goths in the 80’s!). I was amazed by the commitment to the look and the authenticity.

What is your favourite era, and do you 'live it' every day? In what ways?

I love the Fifties and am learning about the Forties.

I adore Mid-Century design, the architecture, the atomic legs on the furniture, the lucite handbags, the big dresses, tiki style and the graphic art. Post war optimism and energy sparked an incredible time for design – and the possibilities and creativity seemed endless.

No I don’t live it every day! I don’t have the time to do the full hair and make-up – I work and have two kids! I also struggle with getting the hair right (James at Sterling Hair did my hair the day of these photos). I do try to incorporate a vintage piece in my outfit everyday whether it’s a brooch or a necklace.

Our home is decorated in an eclectic way with items from many eras scattered throughout from 50’s and 60’s retro, Australiana, Kiwiana, PNG tribal, too, I would rather be practical than a purist. My husband doesn’t mind my creativity – as long as he gets his boy toys - we compromise

Tell us about your favourite item of vintage clothing, kitchenalia, music, furniture or whatever!

I think it has to be my collection of Vintage Sewing patterns they are so inspiring. I have a good number that I use as inspiration for my sewing projects. I usually have to alter the pattern to fit and it is a challenge to find fabric to use – I search op shops and Ebay for genuine fabric – or use what is widely available in fabric shops, some of the stretch sateen prints are lovely, are easy to sew, and you can get a nice fit easily. I don’t really have a problem with making "new" vintage – some vintage garments get quite tired looking, and many are tiny! Finding garments in my size is even harder, sewing is more affordable.

Can you share with us why vintage culture continues to hold such appeal for you?

As a bit of a textiles nerd the diversity of the designs, in textiles and clothing, are especially so interesting to me – and seem to be of endless variety. As a designer – my eyes are always hungry to see something new. The fabrics such as 40’s tropical florals and 50’s atomic prints on barkcloth, the painterly floral cottons, the ugly but beautiful mottled browns and olives of vintage scarves, they really float my boat!

Do you have any tips for anyone starting out in the vintage scene?

I think follow your heart. I think if you love something, whether it’s a style or a look, don’t worry about what others think. You will not please everybody, – so you might as well enjoy yourself!

I am married to an Aussie and we have two kids. We are doing up our 60’s designed house in Sydney’s North. I hate cooking but I love to sew. I recently started blogging over at www.quietvintagesewing.wordpress.com – I love connecting with people who like vintage and or sewing – I hope you take a look sometime.

My twitter handle is trishblairsews and I try and put up a little snap every day of vintage pieces around the house. I just do it to amuse myself.

It’s a dream of mine to produce a range of patterns for vintage clothing. Things that are hard to find, but appealing and beautiful, and in your size!

Sitting in an enchanting little cafe in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy today (and what a captivating place that part of town is) I was inspired to start a little campaign to find out what inspires my readers....and in doing so, I hope it inspires many others in turn !! I want to ask people three questions, because I believe, especially at the beginning of a year, it is important to reflect on where we are at, who we are and where we are heading....sooo......

What Inspires You?

It could be anything from beaded fabrics to man landing on the moon !

It could be anything from performing with elephants to cooking through Julia Childs cook book in a year !

What Do You Want from Your Life?

It could be anything from making a difference in the lives of unloved children to becoming the next editor of Vogue

Please feel free to share all your dreams and aspirations, no matter how crazy or wild (the wilder the better if you ask me !!) - because we all know that 'putting it out there', and speaking our dreams, even just realising what our dreams are, can begin to set the wheels in motion to manifest these things in our lives.

And as for me......

What inspires me?

c) Miraculous occurrences in the everyday

d) People who do not judge others and live great lives of compassion and unbridled love

What is my dream?

Dressing mid century vintage and cancer recovery.....

The Fabulous 1950s Help Cancer Patients Look and Feel Beautiful

Looking good can play a big role in helping cancer patients feel good. Although it’s tempting to throw on a pair of baggy sweats, the ultra-feminine look of the 1950s can help women battling cancer to feel less like a patient and more like a young Elizabeth Taylor. The fashions of this era are all the rage; thanks to the cult TV show “Mad Men.” Here are the main features of 1950s style, starting at the head and ending at the toes:

Side-swept bangs and curled hair

Marilyn Monroe hairstyles, with softly waved bangs gracing the forehead, are an alluring style for wigs worn during chemotherapy. Flipped-up curls give a contemporary look. For some cancers, chemotherapy is the primary treatment option, and hair loss usually results. Mesothelioma treatment, for example, almost always requires chemotherapy. After treatment, a short, Audrey Hepburn hairstyle eases the growing-out phase.

Scarves

Scarves wrapped around the head and tied neatly at the back were popular in the middle of the last century. This is a cute, comfortable alternative to a wig during chemo or the growing-out stage.

Button Earrings

Button earrings with colored faux gems are back in style. For work, button earrings with swirly loops are tastefully elegant.

Scoop necks, V-necks and square necks

Fifties necklines are feminine but leave cleavage to the imagination during the day, a feature that breast cancer survivors appreciate. For evening, necklines can dip lower for those who dare, a la Jayne Mansfield.

Fitted bodices

A fitted bodice with princess lines flatters every figure. Another classic look is a gathered bust that narrows to a slim waistline.

Full skirts and cinched waists

This style accentuates or gives the illusion of an hourglass figure. Circle skirts are a pretty variation, but the poodle skirt is best reserved for costume parties. This curvaceous look is especially flattering for women whose cancers have caused them to lose weight, especially common in mesothelioma, pancreatic cancer and gastric carcinoma.

Pencil skirts

A pencil skirt that hits somewhere around the knee is a sleek classic. A kick pleat, slit or French vent in the back adds a flirty twist. For work, a matching jacket gives a smart, Joan Crawford look.

Pedal pushers and wide-leg pants

Now known as capris, pedal-pushers originated in the 50s with cyclists trying to keep their pant legs out of the bicycle chain. Wide-leg pants reminiscent of Katherine Hepburn slim the legs.

High-waisted, two-piece swimsuits

These swimsuits are flattering to women of all ages, and the high cut hides most surgical scars. Women everywhere are rejoicing that they’re back in style.

Medium-heeled pumps

Fifties’ pumps get their sexy look from toe cleavage and kitten heels, not ankle-twisting stilettos. Fun variations are peep toes, sling-back heels and ankle straps. For casual wear, choose a fun take-off on the saddle shoe.

No matter what you prefer the 50’s style has something to fit all of your needs. It is important to remember that despite having cancer you can still be fashionable and confident. Looking and feeling confident in how you dress will help for an overall recovery.

Celebrating 300 followers with macaroons.......

Oooh !! I recently hit the wonderful 300 followers mark with my precious little blog - personally I cant believe that there are 300 people who choose to regularly read my sentimental musings here, not to mention the 1000 odd people who pass by every week - I am humbled and honoured !!

So, having hit this lovely milestone, I felt that a small celebration was in order, and considering the wonders of Hardware Lane where I now work, the options were endless. However, I could not go past the charm and very Alice Jean's style of this darling little macaroon shop "La Belle Miette"

I jumped in the deep end and bought one of every flavor available - simply because I couldnt choose - and that ment there were enough macaroons to share around everyone in the office, and then some. Let me assure you they were pure heaven on earth, from the equisit Earl Grey Chocolate flavour to the Violet & Blueberry delight. My only complaint is that they are gone so swiftly.....you simply must sit down and take the time to savour every bite !

So a huge thankyou to all the wonderful people who follow my blog - I wish I could have given you each a macaroon !!! I will send you all out a cyber kiss, but I am afraid it wont hold a candle to these lovely gastronomic circles of divinity. And of course if you are ever in Hardware Lane, Melbourne CBD, there is no excuse but to stop by and enjoy a macaroon for yourself !

1950's life on the Gold Coast

In case you havent heard the news - I am in love with my new job for Village Well in Melbourne....my workmates are such kindred spirits, the work dynamic and interesting, the group operates with integrity and ethics that make me feel extremely humbled to be there. Most recently, I have been putting together a time line of Gold Coast history ( you can imagine how much I am loving that ) and came across these adorable photographs on the Gold Coast City Council website....I simply had to share them with you, they are so wonderful....the architecture, the fashions, the culture, everything..... I love these images. As a child we would spend most July holidays on the Gold Coast enjoying the beach, the family oriented theme parks, and I have to say, the all you can eat buffet at Sizzlers restaurant! Great memories !! It was around the 40's and 50's that things began to develop on the Gold Coast as a holiday destination, and by my childhood in the 80's and 90's it had really hit its stride. More recently, the Wintersun festival was held in Coolangatta up until last year and it was terrific to head back to that region as an adult to enjoy once again the winter holiday atmosphere. So, grab a glimpse of the 50's on the Gold Coast - for some it will bring back memories, and for others it will provide fuel for inspiration - but either way, enjoy some 50's eye candy on the first day of the new year !

Personally, I am a big fan of all sorts of music - classical, gypsy, folk, blues, traditional R & B, dixieland, barbershop, rock n roll, lounge, country, contemporary, surf, swing, jazz, and even some top 40 !!! Pretty much anything depending on the mood in which I find myself really !! A week and a half ago I took a glorious early morning drive to the little township of Ballan, roughly one hour west of Melbourne towards Ballarat. Now, I had always pictured that neck of the woods as rather cold and bleak, so imagine my extreme surprise to find the quaintest little town, full of friendly forward thinking people. I was there with work and have never enjoyed myself more on a work sojourn ! We were invited to morning tea with a local couple of artisans who talked and shared and inspired me no end with their visions for community, and artistic life in general (not to mention their glorious alarm clock collection). And might I add, their self built home, reminiscent of European streets, was breathtaking.....have a look at these photographs and see if you are not captivated !!

Then later in the day after engaging a number of people in the streets in lively discussions, we had lunch at the de-lightful Mill Rose restaurant, gallery, cafe and quilt shop. I was in total heaven !! Everything was so very beautiful, the food sheer divinity, and the ambiance the stuff happy dreams are made of. If you sew, eat, garden, or decorate, then a weekend drive to Ballan is very much in order I must say.

Natural beauty tips - and my plastic surgery.......

I love natural beauty remedies, and prefer them over chemicals and procedures where ever possible - after all, it is more 50's isnt it !! But I am not against plastic surgery. Dont get me wrong. If it helps you feel better about yourself, then more power to you. Who am I to talk anyhow, I have had plastic surgery myself, and at the ripe old age of 23 !!! I shiver now when I think about it really....... my boyfriend at the time asked me if there was anything about myself I would change if I could. I said that I had always felt my lips were a little on the thin side (overblown bee stung lips were the rage at the time). That week my boyfriend found a competition in a magazine to win a lip enhancement. Desperate to please him ( but upon reflection, deep down feeling somewhat hurt that he did not see me as beautiful just as I was) I entered the competition. Well, you guessed it, I 'won'. I had the surgery. A round tube of plastic inserted perminently. Me = Petrified. It is still there to this day. My boyfriend was wraped 2 weeks after the procedure when my lips looked 'like Meg Ryan' (where her lips were at their peak of fullness), but by the time a few more weeks had elapsed, my lips had actually returned pretty much to normal size, however now with that small roll of plastic inside them for life. I can feel it whenever I kiss. Secretly, I think I am glad that they dont look all that much different though - I want to be me (and loved for being that way too) !!! As for the boyfriend.....well, the insert lasted longer than the relationship.

But yes, like I said, I have no problem with plastic surgery, so long as it is done for the esteem and personal value of the person going under the knife.

I have recently read a charming and somewhat amusing little book titled "The Mums book of glamour - how to be fabulous". Of course, I really didnt need to read it seeing as I am so fabulous already (!), but I decided to none the less. Filled with funny little tid bits, and ways to make your already hectic life all the more stressful by adding inumerable beauty routines into the daily grind, I did find a terrific section on facial muscle excersises - the sort that can be done while sitting in traffic (not on public transport however).

One of the things that is a telltale sign of aging is a slack jawline due to lack of skin elasticity and sedintary muscles that settle into old familiar daily grooves. But facial deffinition need not belong to the young, and you need not resort to drastic face cutting surgery either, as I have found over the past few weeks of practising these excersises. I can totally feel the work they are doing to my face - and it is mighty encouraging !!!

So my dear friends and readers, I wanted to share these wonderful little natural, no cosmetic prodcedure required, jaw and facial excersises to help you stave off the inevitable..... and may your natural beauty shine through and be treasured by your loved ones !

1. Just out your jaw, open your mouth wide and pull your bottom lip over your bottom teeth. Then move your jaw up and down - you'll look like a cartoon robot, but stick with it. repeat this ten times, twice a day - although preferably in the privacy of your own home.....

2. Sit in a relaxed position. Tilt your head upwards and purse your lips. Hold for five seconds and then relax. Repeat 10 times.

3. Start with your teeth together, and then open your jaw very slightly, Move your lower jaw slowly to one side, as far as it will go, and then return slowly to the center position. Repeat this 10 times and then work the other side.

4. Sit upright, facing forwards with your lips closed but relaxed. Pucker and pout your lips using your cheek muscles, hold the position for ten seconds, and then relax. Repeat this 10 times.

5. Best not to try this one while driving...... close your eyes and lift your eyebrows as high up as you can, as though very surprised. Hold the position for 10 seconds, and then relax. Repeat this 10 times.

Ahh - your done....look out world - here you come, and looking like the grand dame of amazing jawlines below to boot !

I was spoilt rotten recently by a pressie arriving in the mail from my darling sister - a copy of Michael Buble's Christms Album, which I have played and played and played already. The kids and I just love it !!! My out and out favourite is his version of Blue Christmas with a very dixie land jazz vibe.....and it all got me thinking about the plethora of great (and not so great) Christmas Songs out there....people really love this time of year dont they? They really get into the celebration and festivity and party spirit...I think that is just wonderful, it is what community is all about really - celebration together, creating memorable moments, generosity and warmth. Yes, it is truly a precious gift in itself to be able to get into the spirit of this gratful celebratory season.

So, to help you (and me) get into the party spirit, I have traweled the net for some of the lesser known but still awsome Christmas songs ....there is no Elvis, Brenda Lee or Bing Crosby in this list (although I do love their christmas music), I hope that I bring you something you have never heard before that can get your feet dancing up a storm this festive season - all with mid century style of course! What does 'vintage' mean to you?

My life has always revolved around ‘vintage’. It meant decent clothes and fantastic things as a child and as an adult, it is the ability to surround myself with the nostalgic vibe I love. I’m not really the modern type and wearing, living and breathing vintage means that I am being true to myself and not trying to be somebody out of the next Vogue magazine.

What was it that first prompted your interest in vintage culture?

When I was a child, my mother would buy a lot of our clothes from op-shops and the like. Whilst shopping, she would keep an eye out for pieces that pre-dated the 1970s because as she told me, “Trends always come back into fashion, especially midi-length skirts”. Her other influence was the trunk that was chock full of fabric…silks, velvets, brocades, cottons, endless types that fascinated me completely. The textures, colours and the originality of them all were heaven to me then as they are now.

An aunt was also a great influence in that she provided me with a dress-up box of vintage clothing and told me, “Don’t mix patterns, black is always a safe option and learn to mend and make your own clothes.”

This early passion for clothing was alongside an education of early movies, books, Art Deco architecture, cars and music, which formed my appreciation of the aesthetics of the 1920s to‘60s.

What is your favourite era, and do you 'live it' every day? In what ways?

The late 1940s through to the late‘50s is my favourite era…the full skirts that create glamour, the wiggle dresses that show off what women are all about, wearing matching shoes and handbags, adding a hat as an exclamation mark…

I wear something from this timeframe every day, whether it be a piece of clothing or a combo of Bakelite bangles and brooch always listening to the music of the time!

In Summer I am drawn to the cotton dresses and skirts of the 1950s, they provide the comfort needed in our climate and always put me in a good mindset for the day. How can you not feel happy wearing a bold floral or colourful novelty pattern! 1940s suits and coats are divine for Winter. A tailored fit, beautifully weighted wool sometimes with the perfect detail, all finished off with gloves and a spectator (sports oxford) shoe…luxury!

Tell us about your favourite item of vintage clothing, kitchenalia, music, furniture or whatever !

Oh where do I start!?

The easy choice is my 1920s Art Deco wedding ring, a handmade piece with an old mine cut diamond. It is a truly original ring that speaks volumes of the workmanship that one does not always see these days.

My other equally favourite item is the 1950s gown that my Mum bought for my first ball. I found it of all places, in Hunters and Collectors which was a leather and Doc Marten shop in Auckland. Made of a cream silk brocade, sitting on the shoulders, it crosses over at the bust, sits wide and flat at the waist and is completed by yards upon yards of skirt. An elegant gown that I still love swanning around in.

Can you share with us why vintage culture continues to hold such appeal for you?

Aesthetics… We no longer all ‘dress’ for everyday and up for an occasion, build houses that are extraordinary or have lawns, learn to dance in pairs to great music, drive cars with the glint of fresh chrome, respect our elders and take pride in every little thing in our lives.

I abhor the lack of manners and attitude that has permeated everyday life. And for goodness sake, pull your pants up boys and put some clothes on girls!!!

Do you have any tips for anyone starting out in the vintage scene?

Make use of the internet to look into all aspects of what takes your fancy and don’t be shy to say “Hi”. If you see someone wearing a look you like, ask them about it, it is always an honour to be complimented on an outfit. Pop along to the markets/fairs, vintage clothing shops and those that do good reproductions. Strike up a conversation with the shop guys and gals, they’re usually a friendly bunch. Keep an eye out for gigs marketed as Rockabilly and Swing, there will always be people dancing and if that isn’t your thing, the music should still be worth checking out.

Most of all, be comfortable with whatever you put on in the morning and don’t sweat the small stuff…who cares if you’re wearing a 1930s gown with Doc Martens!

Now is your chance to provide us with an overview of who you are and what you do.

I am a housewife who loves to relax at home with my daughter in our beautiful backyard. I’m usually found dressed to fit some theme for the day, whether it be Hawaiian, Mexican or just plain let us get dirty denim. Handy with a sewing needle, I have a pile of alterations that I like to do at a leisurely pace…no need to rush in my day!

My evenings are spent with my wonderful husband, with a glass of red in hand and a smile on my face as I watch him playing with our daughter.

I have the most wonderful friends who share my passion for vintage and we all love to do the same things, markets, sewing, reading and good ol’ fashioned BBQ’s and get togethers.

Finally, what or who inspires you and why?

My family and friends are my daily inspirations. How can you not be inspired seeing the world 24/7 alongside your child! My husband is an old-fashioned guy; He works for his family and his hobbies and I still love dressing up for him. My friends look fantastic on a daily basis and if that didn’t keep me on my toes then an intervention would be needed! There is nothing like sharing a fabulous buy with a friend who completely understands where you’re coming from aesthetically.

Most of all, I’m inspired by the everyday…there is beauty all around us, I’m just lucky I get to sit back and enjoy it!

Get thou to a cinema, the movie gods say, and be sure at catch Midnight in Paris before it's season ends !! I LOVED this beautiful film, full of rich imagery and costuming, but I ADORED it for its portrait of a man caught up in the thrill of a bygone era (just like yours truly) and the struggle of present day reality vs that captivating fantasy. It is certainly a wonderful discussion piece for starters...... don't miss it all you fellow history lovers. Where, oh where, are all the adorable men like Gil in this piece?

24 years ago I watched Back to the Future for the first time at a grade 5 sleep over party, and my life hasnt been the same since. I mean, Dad had/has the BEST 50's record collection to grow up listening too (and great taste in music too I must add), and I LOVED Happy Days and classic matinees as a very young girl. And lets not forget I adored my Grandmothers....but....... nothing catapulted me into 50's love like Back to the Future.....I could go on and on with how it influenced me, but I wont bore you to your eyeballs with all the gory details.

However, I DO want to share with you how much BTTF helped me appreciate and adore the whole semi geek look, as classically portrayed by Crispen Glover, aka George McFly. I recently posted on Facebook how much I love George McFly, but I dont think anyone really got it (insert smilie face here). Think about it gals, shy, talented, misunderstood guy overcomes his fears, braves his 'arch nemisis' and 'lays him out' to help a gal in trouble....now, what is not to love about that ???????? What a legend !!! Doesn't every gal like to think she is worth fighting for????? Yes George McFly, you are a hero in my books, and therefor I am a humble adorer of the whole semi-cool-geeky look thanks to you. Nowdays 50s/60's glasses make me go weak at the knees, because long before George McFly wore them, Buddy Holly sported them first.......

So, crazy as it may seem to some, I would take a guy with 50's style glasses over some man power, Jamie Durie style bloke any day of the week thankyou very much. And George, I am happy for you to be my density or destiny anyday !!!

Paul Bangay Open Garden....

A couple of weekends ago I had the honour of attending the open garden of Paul Bangay's amazing home "Stonefields " near Woodend in Victoria ..... I was totally inspired (as was to be expected) by the caliber of his design and the beauty of the garden, I simply had to share the stunning images with you.......

I do love open gardens as they provide a chance to glean ideas and be inspired, it is so interesting to observe how traditional plants can be melded into either funky contemporary designs or used in a classical manner, or even in a combo of both. Open gardens are also such a divine chance to frock up and enjoy tea and scones in heavenly surrounds.....and who wouldnt be keen on a little of that !!!

Great Venues - The Luwow

Wow, oh wow, oh wow.......I have just been to The Luwow bar in Johnson Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne and it was wonderful !! I had the great privilege of being able to attend a sensational 40th birthday bash for Jamie of Press-tone records last night at this happening place - and was thoroughly honoured to be able to be there - but I just wanted to encourage anyone who is visiting or living in Melbs to check out this south pacific paradise style tiki bar....the cocktails are to die for, the decor is eccentrically tiki (which equals totally awesome in my books), and the music is killer. After all, when one walks in the door and 'Stranded in the Jungle" by the Cadets is playing, lets face it, your not going to walk out in a hurry !!!! So here are a couple of picks of my best friend Brooke, darling pal Carola and I enjoying cocktails, atmosphere, and inspirational company at the Luwow Bar..... oh, and keep your ear to the ground, I understand that Thursday nights at the Luwow next year are not to be missed (but more on that later perhaps !!!)

I love Guess Adds !! Certian campaigns really do capture the glamour and feel of the 50's, and leave me breathless with inspiration !!! Guess Adds have proved the 'breaking ground' for a number of women who then went on to modeling superstardom - Claudia Schiffer, Eva Herzigova, Anna Nicole Smith and Laetitia Casta to name a few. I was intrigued to read that Michael J Fox's costuming in one of my favourite films "Back to the Future" was entirely provided by the Guess company also. I love this outfit - it was made when I was alot thinner though, lucky for me the weight seems to have gone to my boobs !!!!! Believe me, this dress never had such cleavage when I first made it about 2-3 years ago....... and arnt the green beads darling???? I have a friend who calls them my 'peas' (the beads I mean !!)....cute !!! As for the cleavage, well, with summer time here now, it is easier to be active and energetic - I am hoping I can return to my former 'slender-er' figure again before the season is out....nice to know I can wear this pretty little number whether curvaceous or not though !!! And that is the great thing about dressing mid century - the clothing styles were designed for women, so one could be as curvaceous as ones body dictated and still look beautiful, not to mention feminine and attractive. Infact often times one looked better with a bit of flesh....... sorry Kate Moss etc, but you can keep your catwalk petite-ness.....curves are yet another very good reason to dress vintage I say !

Even though these articles are a couple of months old now, I thought I would post them for others to enjoy and be inspired by...after all, in my world it is the 'everyday people' doing amazing things that is where the creativity, richness, beauty and 'goodness' of the world is - not in celebrity, or money, or worthy-less fame. To me Marc and Sue embody life lived in fullness and beauty....and gosh, they are just damn nice people to boot !! What a blessing to have such friends - be inspired people !

I LOVE to sew.....can i repeat that once again? - I LOVE to sew!! For me it is soooo very satisfying to bring together something beautiful out of a sheet of fabric. The creativity of wandering into a fabric store or stumbling across a darling length of pretty pattern in an op shop, and instantly seeing what it could become in my head. The leisurely joy of taking a quiet Saturday afternoon, putting on some music, pouring a cup of earl grey (or two or three!!) and setting about to transform the ordinary into the beautiful. Like I said before, ahhh, satisfying ! At least for the creative person that is me.....

I frequently come across people who lament that they cannot sew, who wish they could acquire a distinctive wardrobe with a vintage touch, but they have never had the opportunity to learn, and now find that they dont have the time. I totally get that too....... some are academics, some are sporty types and some are creatives etc.....not everyone is able to find joy in creating. For my friends who are fulfilling their particular role in the world that does not lean towards sewing your own , let me tell you about one particular dress company that does a mighty fine job of providing beautiful vintage-esque garments.

What does vintage mean to you ?

When I think of Vintage I think of Pinups and muscle cars, I think of down to earth "real" people. Vintage is a state of mind that I myself live in, there is just something intriguing about the style of dress and hair that makes me feel like I am on the pages of an old school magazine.

What was it that first prompted your interest in vintage culture?

Marilyn Monroe has captivated me for years, she was a curvy girl with attitude and style. She showed me that anything is possible and what inspired me to follow my dreams of being a pinup model.

What is your favorite era, and do you 'live it' every day? In what ways?

My favorite era is the 50’s, I live it to an extent in my everyday life. I may not be all dolled up with my hair and makeup done dressed to a "T" but my everyday wardrobe includes rockabilly and pinup garb

Tell us about your favorite item of vintage clothing, kitchenalia, music, furniture or whatever !

My favorite musician is Wanda Jackson- she has that edge to her that makes me wanna dance and be happy I'm a woman.

Can you share with us why vintage culture continues to hold such appeal for you?

Vintage culture continues to have such an appeal to me because it is a culture that accepts girls with curves, something that is not accepted as easily in this day and age.　

Do you have any tips for anyone starting out in the vintage scene?

Research, research, research… you can never do enough, utilize the Internet to its full capabilities you tube videos, books and read blogs. You will be able to get a feel for the style of vintage that you like and know what style and direction that you should head in.

When visiting the Australian Bayou's, one place you simply must call into for a cup of earl grey or a divine snack is the Koondrook Long Paddock Cafe .....my favourite local cafe. Located a stones through from the beautiful Murray River and at the head of Gunbower Island, the cafe nestles quietly in the main street of the tiny, quaint hamlet of Koondrook - so perfect for reading the morning papers in the courtyard sunshine with a coffee, or sampling the delicious fare and then meandering to the river for a bit of lolling in the sunshine with a good book.....heavenly !!!

Have been pondering what I would wear to the races if I should go ....and thought I would share a couple of my outfit ideas.....I think we need more excuses to dress up than the spring racing carnival though...dressing up is still so much fun - big 'little girl' that I am !!!!

Something to catch the eye....

This amazing house caught my eye in the paper on the weekend....and who could fail to miss or love its stunning art deco exterior? I promptly looked it up online to indulge in day dreams a little bit more!

However, although it is a modern decor lovers delight on the inside, I was a bit disappointed to see that the whole 20's-30's effect had been pretty much lost, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. But then, this is a Toorak mansion and I guess the designers thought that those with the money to live in Toorak would not want a 30's style bathroom or kitchen (more's the pitty).

Nothing daunted, I soon designed every room perfectly in my imagination, as well as planning out the most amazing vintage parties and events in this most stunning of venues. My biggest daydream dilemma, however, would be where on earth to keep my chooks, indulge my gardening passion and establish my vegie garden and fruit trees !!!

Anyhow, I do hope you enjoy a little bit of daydreaming on Monday morning too..........

Cupcakes for lunches

Fancy Pants eyes off some blueberry muffins that he helped make!

On a big sustainable lifestyle bent recently (thanks to the arrival of my adorable 5 chickens - Fancy Pants, Rainbow Chook, Fluffy Bum, and we have yet to name the other two!) I have been baking my own bread and making home made goodies for the kids school lunches. These home made goodies usually take the form of muffins/cupcakes, and I have no end of delight in devising new and exciting recipes with my little ones......we have tried chocolate and raspberry, sultana and raspberry, blueberry, and pear and chocolate so far, and have many more up our sleeve to put into action over the coming 4th term.

So here is our recipe for basic muffins/cupcakes, and in the spirit of creativity, feel free to experiment with what you add - choc chips, fruit, nuts, marshmallows, you name it, the fun is always in the creation !!

We experimented with my new icing piper on our chocolate cupcakes...

Basic Cupcake Recipe

125g soft butter

125g Caster sugar

150g self raising flour

2 eggs (thanks Fancy Pants!!)
2 tablespoons natural yogurt or cream

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 180 degree Celsius and fill muffin tray with 'patti pans'. Cream butter and sugar. Add flour, eggs, yogurt/cream and vanilla in large bowl of electric mixer and mix until just smooth. Beat in desired flavouring by hand and place mixture in 'patti pans'. Bake in oven for 15mins or until springy to touch.

My only problem seems to be that all my children's friends want some too - hence I now make double quantity !!

My babies adore their pet chooks, and love to cuddle with them....

High Tea for a tremendous cause.....

Have you ever been moved to tears by someone elses plight? I was this afternoon, and even had to rush off to the powder room to deal with my need for a little sob. OK, so I am a very feeling person by nature, but if you cannot be moved by the situation of African women, outcast from their families and societies simply because they have undergone exceptionally traumatic labour/birth experiences, resulting in bodily deformation, then I would say you have a heart of stone. I know that I was scared as I faced all three of my childbirth experiences, and I live in the west where medical help is brilliant. Imagine being a woman in a remote African village and simply through the act of bringing life into the world, you face death, rejection, isolation, lifelong deformation and dysfunction of your body. Boy oh boy, we just don't know how good we have it here !!

This afternoon I joined with close on 100 women in the rural community of Swan Hill in sharing a High Tea to raise much needed money and awareness for the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia - the vision of a husband and wife team from Australia who have received the Companion of the Order of Australia (our countries highest award) for their establishment of this hospital. It helps restore life to suffering women, and educates others to become midwives in needy communities. Can you spare 10 minutes out of your day to simply read the website about this amazing organisation? Today we raised $800, but if you can help by knitting blankets for the hospital, then that is tremendously valued as well.

Here are some photographs of the afternoon, at a bed and breakfast on the charming Murray River, entertained by songbird Diana Riding, and lapping up all the refinement of a beautiful spread of goodies and numerous cups of tea in fine company ! I wore my favourite purple ensemble, which I have pictured here in my messy hallway.....so everyone can see that a busy mummy can indeed 'look the goods', despite the messy activity of her household.... and what a privilege it is to be a mother in such a blessed country such as this !! Happy Sunday everyone !!

What does 'vintage' mean to you?

Vintage, for me is before 1965. Clothing was elegant as were furnishings. We were still looking to land on the moon and the interest in space exploration was an exciting prospect.

Travel was exotic, whether is be across the country or around the world.

What was it that first prompted your interest in vintage culture?

I was always in awe of the elegant men and women I saw in the movies and I loved rock and roll from a very young age. I never did fit in !!! I wanted to wear bobby sox and evening gowns and fabulous hats everywhere, not all at the same time ...hehe....I have a net petticoat that had belonged to an aunt and wore it under anything I could as a child. I still wear that petticoat. I guess I was destined to be "vintage"

What is your favourite era, and do you 'live it' every day? In what ways?

I have two favourite era's, the 1940's and the 1950's I wear vintage or vintage reproductions made by me from vintage patterns everyday. I wouldn't leave the house without hair and makeup done. I also cook from vintage cookbooks and use my 1950's gadgets as they were intended. I don't buy things just to look at they have to be able to be used, worn or read just as they were when they were new.

Tell us about your favourite item of vintage clothing, kitchenalia, music, furniture or whatever !

I have so many favourite things, my house and it's original pink kitchen. My Heywood Wakefield furniture. I have a date book, pickup on ebay, that had belonged to a teenage girl in 1960. She wrote her dates and dances in it, the names of her friends. i so enjoy reading about a small piece of her life. And of course my wardrobe of clothes and my poodle collection.

Can you share with us why vintage culture continues to hold such appeal for you?

The elegance and style that was reflected in everything. Dressing for dinner, the movies, a cocktail party, even a picnic. I love to imagine where my clothes have been and what they have "done" Did a dress "see" Elvis or Dean Martin ...........Things were made to last, quality was important, things made today, I doubt, will be in daily use 50 - 70 years from now.

Do you have any tips for anyone starting out in the vintage scene?

Those who are new to the vintage scene now have so many places where they can research the era or style that appeals to them. The internet is an amazing resource. Be true to yourself and don't choose something just because it's "trendy' right now.

Now is your chance to provide us with an overview of who you are and what you do

I grew up in Australia and now live in Las Vegas. I enjoy sewing and cooking and caring for my husband and house. I like to think of myself as a Domestic Goddess, a title I always use when asked by strangers, what work field am I in. I also have a very active social life and wonderful friends. I have recently begun to perform burlesque and enjoy it very much. When I am in Sydney I like to pick up uniquely Australian 50's pieces to bring back to the US and have them around the house. I have been trying to convince hubby to make tyre swan planters. He seems some what hesitant.

I love to go to flea markets and antique malls, the never ending search for the next perfect thing.

Finally, what or who inspires you and why?

My inspiration comes from many things. The beautiful men and women of the silver screen. Jayne mansfield, Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Grace Kelly, Clark Gable, Cary Grant and oh so many more, the list goes on. The everyday people of the past, an unknown person in a photo found at a flea market.

Feeling very much like a country girl, I decided to wear my blue gingham .....I may be kicking around the house and doing some more sewing today, but for the feeling of prettiness it gives me to dress this way, it is so worth it. Having had a few conversations in the past few weeks about dressing and image etc and I have really been evaluating my inner reasons for dressing as I do.....people dress for many and varied reasons - none of which are 'wrong' either if you ask me - to be noticed, to look fashionable, to feel beautiful, to feel comfortable, to be practical, to make an individual statement....... well, for me, the way I dress comes down to simply loving a certain look and finding it to be, for me, the most beautiful expression of creativity and individuality I know. I realised this afresh while watching the 1954 movie "The High and Mighty" with John Wayne last night. I was entranced by all the female characters and their style, and I knew in my heart that for me, this era of dressing simply feels like 'home' in a way no other style does. And after all, for most women, isnt bringing our own expression of beauty to the world simply intrinsic to who we are? I hope so !

Living in the Australian Bayou's....

This little article was recently published in Melbourne's 'The Age' newspaper. It detailed 6 reasons why a person might want to visit Gunbower - a little town of aprox 200 people near where I live. One of the 6 reasons was Gunbower Island, a most stunning national and state park...the largest inland island in Australia and my childhood backyard. Grandma's Jean's beautiful dairy farm and garden of roses, orchard and deciduous trees backed onto Gunbower Island and I must say it made me nearly burst with pride to see it referred to in the paper as Australia's answer to the Bayous of America !!! As such, I thought I might as well run with the magnificent promotion of my home and share little bits a pieces about life in the Bayous of Australia every now and again......

So, on a rainy, wet footy grand final day, I took a drive to my very favourite road (after stopping at my favourite cafe) in the vicinity of 'the bayou'....Little Forrest Road, Barham. Not strictly Gunbower Island, it is still a part of the redgum lined river country that makes the region so special. There are three major townships that flank the island - Gunbower, Cohuna and Koondrook/Barham - and the regions surrounding them are filled with picturesque farmland, river country and massive strands of river red gums. So, here are some rainy day photographs of my favourite road.... a walk or bike ride down this road is such a peaceful experience with Kookaburra's, parrots, willy wagtail birds, kangaroo's and emus all making a regular appearance, and the eucalypts, orange groves and clover drench the air with a heady smells of blossom and our famous native healing oil. I wish I could impart those things to you via my blog !!! But for now, google some Cajun music in another website page and listen as you take a journey down my favourite road in the Bayou !!!

Chocolate Fudge Funtime

School holiday's provide the perfect opportunity to get into the kitchen and make some seriously indulgent, hip expanding goodies with the kids......and I have found nothing better to accomplish this than my girlfriend Kerry's AMAZING chocolate fudge recipe !! Try it out for yourself and be tantalized........

500g Chocolate of choice

1 tin of condensed milk

60g Butter

melt all ingredients in in a saucepan stirring continually

Spoon into a lined slice tin and put into fridge until firm and set

** You can add nuts, fruit, choc chips, mint essence...infect anything creative at all to make your own 'house speciality' !! We made rocky road fudge above with fruit, nuts and marshmallows....mmmmmm !!

Oh, and dont forget that this sort of cooking makes terrific homemade christmas gifts, all packaged up beautifully of course! (Or you could buy a plum pudding from my shop !!)

Old Fashioned Flower of the Season - Spring 2011

How very tragic that one of the most elegant of flowers should be relegated to the title of "Funeral Lily" conjuring up images of death and mourning. I wish someone would name Arum Lillies "Celebratory Lily" instead - then they could be used in a funeral where one wished to celebrate a persons life, and we could still picture them as a flower perfectly suited to a wedding, christening or dinner party occasion !

Honestly, I think very few flowers come even close to the Arum Lily for elegance. Have you ever looked deep into the creamy petal of an Arum Lily? I mean really looked into that colour? It is smooth, pure perfection without fault. I very much wish I was a bee that could crawl down into it's depths and snuggle up inside it's creaminess.

In Victorian times the splendour of the arum lily was well recognised, and in the Victorian era code of flowers it was given the meaning 'magnificent beauty'. At the turn of the century a bouquet of expensive arums was the ultimate indulgence bestowed only by serious admirers. Oh for such poetic compliments in today's 'courtship rituals' !!

Arum Lillies have long been a favourite of mine, and as such I believe they are well deserving of a place in my 'Old fashioned flower of the season' catalogue. I remember as a child, my mother grew then around the base of the water tank at the hold homestead. They were so lush and shiny green all year and so charming with their flowers in the springtime just as we children were 'released' from our cooped up winter indoors come the spring. What a darling way to be greeted when winter was over, by the dear friendly faces of the arum lillies.

Growing Facts: (from Garden Express)

ARUM LILY Family: Araceae
Arum Lilies are simple to grow in any position that enjoys regular water or is naturally damp, even wet. They have thick lush dark green foliage that grows to 70cm high with large metre high pure white flowers and striking yellow spadix. A variation is the striking 'green goddess' with its unusual green and white flowers.

Flowering Season: Spring to early summer.
Plant Size: 1m H x 60cm W
Planting Density: App. 50cm apart.
Multiplication Speed: Rapid. Clumps can reach 1m wide in 3 years.
Preferred Aspect: Sun or Shade. Dappled light best. Damp or well watered area best.
Plant Uses: Use in shady wet areas, pond edges. Great cut flower.
Likes: Wet feet, being left undisturbed.
Dislikes: Hot dry conditions.
Watering - Water once per week during dry periods.
Fertilising - Mix a handful of complete fertiliser through soil when planting. Top dress in spring.
Lifting and storage - No need to lift for at least 3 years. Can be lifted and divided during the winter months and re-planted immediately.
Pests - None.
Tips- Arum lily has evergreen foliage from Autumn till mid summer. A plant for wet or boggy areas, in garden beds or around ponds as long as these are isolated and not near waterways or other damp areas where it may spread.

1950's Fair at Rose Seidler House

What a glorious weekend I had in August visiting my beautiful Sydney friends, Marc and Sue, enjoying their stunning home and hospitality (more on that in a later post) and especially taking in all the sights, sounds and wonders of the Sydney 1950's Fair at Rose Seidler House. It is an event I strongly reccomend you attend if you possibly can - held every year at the beautiful, contempoary designed and National Trust listed house by Harry Seidler. There were frocks, groovy dud's, nick nacks, dress patterns (my favourite!!), china, furniture, hairdressing, makeover sessions, roving music, on stage entertainment and gourmet food to list but a few of the highlights !! But without any doubt the very best feature of the day for me was being with lovely friends and deepening those relationships, and admiring the creativity surrounding me. A totally inspiring time !!!

More adventures of Super Mummy and Rainbow Girl...

Today Rainbow Girl and Super Mummy decided that all the Barbie Doll's needed brand new party dresses ( and a special home made chocolate cake for the said party ) so we set about making 6 new dolly dresses. Super Mummy remembers loving making and designing Barbie clothes when she was just a little superhero, and Super Mummy was very keen to pass that enjoyment onto Rainbow Girl. Together they sat down and found a top and skirt design online that they then melded into a dress and added a tie waist ribbon to make putting on and fitting so much easier.

Ta dah !!! We have 6 stunning new dresses all ready to wear to the party !! And Super Mummy is so glad that she is somewhat of an organised sewing hoarder and has kept oodles of scrap fabrics for just such an occasion........ ahhh, who needs Edith Head when one has Super Mummy and Rainbow Girl at the helm !!! (Ok Ok, so unlike Edith in a film, these are all the same pattern !! Never Mind.....sometimes a Super Mummy takes the easy way to giving joy to Rainbow Girl !!)

A Simple Guide to Oils for Skin Care

Using natural oils for your skin is one of the most cost effective ways to keep your skin healthy.

And though not quite as powerful as some anti-aging creams, vegetable and nut oils are a great

alternative since they are full of powerful skin nourishing properties.

But before you reach for the nearest bottle of vegetable oil, use this simple guide to find out how

to pick the right oil for your skin type and skin concern

But first…How to choose quality oil

Though oils are naturally full of anti-oxidants, they are still sensitive to going rancid. Putting rancid

oil on your skin is much more damaging to your skin than putting nothing at all. It can be pretty

tough to tell whether oil has gone bad, so I have these general guidelines to help me avoid rancid

oils.

•

Butters and oils that are solid at room temperature have a longer shelf life. (Shea butter, coco

butter, palm oil, coconut oil for example)

•

Oils derived from areas that are hot or tropical climates usually have a longer shelf life.

•

Oils that need to be refrigerated (like flaxseed oil and rosehip seed oil) should only be used if you

know they have been in refrigeration since first extracted.

•

Adding fractionated coconut oil, Jojoba oil or vitamin E to fresh oils can extend their shelf life, but

it cannot make rancid oil good again.

•

Any store bought oil blend that contains oils that should be refrigerated should be considered

already rancid.

Oil for every skin

Oily skin

Using certain oils can help to dissolve oil plugs (aka blackheads) and gently remove excessive oil

on the surface of the skin.

Use

: Grape seed oil, Sunflower, Jojoba oil or Hazelnut oil

How to use

: Cleanse and exfoliate your skin, use oil as a facial massage medium and follow with a

mild cleanser and then apply facial mask. Lastly, place a few drops of oil on your hands and gently

press onto your face.

Dry Skin

Skin that does not produce enough oil is said to be dry. Dry skin loses moisture quickly, is more

prone to irritation and shows signs of aging sooner.

Use: Macadamia Nut oil, Camellia oil, Rice Bran oil, or Jojoba oil

How to use: Cleanse and exfoliate your skin, use oil as a massage medium and apply mask or

moistened hot towel over skin. Remove mask with warm water and press a few drops of oil onto

skin. If using warm moist towel, simply remove any excess oil with towel.

Sensitive or Irritated skin

Some skin types are naturally prone to irritation, for others it may be a temporary occurrence

(such as from a sunburn). Either way, the following oils are known to have strong antiinflammatory

properties to help calm your skin down.

Use:

Kukui nut oil, Emu oil, Tamanu oil

How to use:

Cleanse skin and rinse cleanser using cool water. Gently press a few drops of oil onto

skin followed by a cool, gel mask. A cold compress or thin slices of chilled cucumber can be used

instead of a mask. Remove mask with cool water and finish off with a few drops of oil gently

pressed into the skin.

Mature skin

I don't really need to explain to you what mature skin looks like, do I? You know what it looks like,

and you know if you have it. Here's what to do…

Use:

Argan oil, Emu oil, Pomegranate oil, Sea Buckthorn Berry, Squalane oil or Rosehip oil

How to use:

Pretty much the same way as the dry skin facial above.

Helpful hints:

•

Create a blend of oils for your skin type to help customize your facial.

•

Although not always necessary, it's best to keep oils stored in the fridge and date them

•

The above facial treatments can be done up to twice a week.

•

I find that often the freshest oils from online retailers or from local manufacturers (if you can find

'em)

•

Oils should be used sparingly on facial skin, similar to how one would use an expensive serum

What does 'vintage' mean to you?

I was born in 1987 so pretty much anything before then ;) That said I am mostly interested in the 1940’s-50’s.

What was it that first prompted your interest in vintage culture?

I have been a fan of the typical 1950’s silhouettes for pretty much as long as I can remember though they were not something I could picture myself wearing until around 6 years ago. I found myself in Japanese Lolita fashion for a very long time and gradually became accustomed to the idea of petticoats and frills. I found my tastes gravitating to a lot of the Lolita items that were particularly inspired by the 50’s and 60’s from brands like Metamorphose. I grew up listening to almost exclusively rockabilly music as a kid and my partner James was quite involved in the Brisbane scene when we met so it all just kind of fell into place!

What is your favourite era, and do you 'live it' every day? In what ways?

I don’t know that I really live a particular era anymore, my day to day style now sways much more towards Hime Gyaru (Princess Gal Fashion from Japan) which is a mixture of Rococo stylings and modern influence but even then I don’t consider myself exclusively that style. These days I limit myself less in my choices and just go with the flow of how I feel that day.

Tell us about your favourite item of vintage clothing, kitchenalia, music, furniture or whatever !

Definitely my string of pearls. I don’t have many heirlooms but I have a strand of beautiful pearls which have been passed down by my mother and possibly back through the generations as well. I always feel extra pretty when I wear them!

Can you share with us why vintage culture continues to hold such appeal for you?

I think because it has been such a large part of my life so far it would just seem unnatural to not have it all of a sudden!

Do you have any tips for anyone starting out in the vintage scene?

Research, research and when you think you know a decent amount… go back and research some more. There is so much to learn and know about vintage culture and fashion that you could spend several lifetimes learning it all. It can seem overwhelming but start off small and pick something in particular you love and find out everything you can about it. The more you know and try out the better you can put everything together.

It's just fantastic and I have been jiving in my loungeroom to "Itchy Twitchy Feeling" ever since .... hope you enjoy it too ....

Itchy Twitchy Feeling

Bobby Hendricks (b. February 22, 1938, Columbus, Ohio) is an American R&B singer who charted two hits in the late 1950s. However, before embarking on a solo career, Bobby Hendricks was a member of The Swallows and recorded with The Flyers before becoming a successful solo act. (He also sang lead on The Drifters' Drip Drop).

His single Itchy Twitchy Feeling, which was covered by his former band soon after it began attracting radio airplay, hit the U.S. charts, reaching #5 on the Black Singles chart and #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958. Hendricks's only other charting single, Psycho, was a novelty song depicting a psychiatrist talking with a patient.Psycho peaked at #73 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. New York City disc jockey Dr. Jive (Tommy Smalls) was the voice of the psychiatrist on Psycho.

From 1961, off and on, through 2008, Bobby Hendricks worked as lead singer with Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters and appeared with them on PBS in the ever popular Doo Wop 51 television broadcast and Doo Wop Love Songs when he sang Stand By Me with Bill Pinkney, Charlie Thomas and Ben E. King.

About two months ago, I got all fired up...... I love sewing and find it very therapeutic, but with the winter cold my machine had remained stashed away in the laundry room gathering cobwebs and dust. Who wants to sit in a cold old laundry on a winter's day? Anyhow, all of a sudden, I felt the creative urge to bring out the sewing machine and create all sorts of havoc in my toasty warm living area, as I spread fabric, bobbins, ribbons and thread from floor to ceiling in a passionate creative frenzy of dressmaking.

I have been collecting children's clothing patterns from the 50's-70's for ages, and when I decided to have a crack at an online sustainability based shop, well, I needed some home made stock to fill it !!! Out came the dress patterns and reams of beautiful fabric I had stashed over the years, and I sewed with might and main. Needless to say after two weeks my neck was aching, and I needed a visit to the chiropractor, but the creative satisfaction was well worth it as I surveyed all the pretty frocks on hangers in my dining room.

The next fun bit was doing some little photography sessions with my daughter, and daughters of friends in the finery - after many laughs, and innumerable milkshakes and cake for thankyou's, the dresses and pictures were complete and ready to be put on my shop. I am not overly concerned about them selling, however, as they will easily fill the wardrobe of my little 'rainbow girl' if they don't.....and to my delight, she adores any clothing made for her by Mummy.

Let me just say I am so very very thankful I have had this phase of my life where I can spend time doing this sort of thing - I realise it is a great privilege to be able to spend quality time doing 'homemaking activity's' these days, sewing, baking etc, and as I survey the collection of beautiful things that have resulted from my endeavours, as well as the confidence, sparkle and joy that my children possess, it isnt hard to find something to be thankful for - despite the frequent frustrations of being a mum.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy peeking at the results of two weeks of hard sewing labour here, and maybe, just maybe, my perfectionist grandmother looking down might be proud that I have finally learnt to sew with neatness and skill ! I hope so !

Saving our historic buildings.....

Isnt it wonderful to arrive in a city or town, and be totally inspired by the beautiful historic architecture that you find there? Whenever I drive through Bendigo, a town I have known and loved all my life, I still find myself in awe of the beauty of the buildings built on the prosperity of the 1860's gold rush. And when I first visited Mildura in Victoria's far north west, I was gob smacked by the amount of stunning and mostly untouched art deco public buildings - a result of the slowing down of the towns progress from that time, thus retaining most of the fine architecture for today....phew !! But what of places that have no regard for their heritage? And what of more modern, contemporary architecture that has not quite yet come to public attention as being worthy of preservation...... I am thinking of 1950's and 60's cream brick houses, of the same era public buildings (one example off the top of my head - Echuca Council Offices), of sites given provenance by their association with people who are today's leaders, artists or visionaries. We are in truth probably only 10 years away from these sites being recognised by the broader public in the same way they now view art deco buildings, but in the meantime, what can those of us with a love of mid century architecture do to rescue these beautiful icons of our recent past from the clutches of the spider like web of 'newer is better, bigger, bolder' type developments?

Firstly, I would suggest that education and awareness are paramount. How will the broader public recognise the value of our recent past places of significance unless they are shown the value? Events like the recent 50's fair at Rose Seidler House (more on that in another post soon to come) do MUCH to promote the value of our more recent cultural times - more such events and publicising of places of mid century significance are a must !

And the second thing we can do is to voice our love and appreciation to the valid people and government bodies. Petitioning the Heritage council in your state to register significant buildings (before it's too late) is vital, as is supporting actions to oppose inappropriate development at the expense of historical significance.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for appropriate development. But not at the expense of our heritage sites. We are a democratic community in Australia, so theoretically we can exist together with consideration and empathy.....those of us that LOVE history, and those that want to develop something new (and make money usually).

If you value historic buildings, can I suggest helping out one cause that is playing out in Hornsby, Sydney at this very moment? The beautiful CWA buildings are under threat of demolition from the local council for nothing more than supposed 'access to extend the swimming pol complex', although there appears to be some hidden agendas involved (typical!). Please head to this website and register your name on the petition to save this building from turning to dust. There is also a facebook site that you can join to stay updated.

Gillian's dreamy Earl Grey Tea Cake

This cake is simply to die for !!! You simply MUST try it - either for afternoon tea, or for a scrumptious dessert served with cream, custard or icecream. Mmmmmmmm..............

Earl Grey Tea Cake

1.5 cups of chopped fresh dates

1 tsp bicarb soda

1 cup of brewed earl grey tea

2 apples peeled and grated

1 1/4 cup of self raising flour

3/4 cup of brown sugar – for a lighter version, use raw sugar and a tablespoon of golden syrup

150 grams butter melted – if you prefer a less “greasy” cake, reduce the butter to 80g- it still works well

2 tsp of natural vanilla extract

4 eggs

Preheat Oven to 180C. Line baking loaf tin with baking paper. Place dates, bicarb of soda and tea in a bowl. I left the tea bag in the bowl during this time for around 10 minutes. Using a barmix or hand held blender, blend the mixture till smooth. Set aside. Mix flour, apple and sugar in a bowl till combined. Add in butter, vanilla, eggs and date mixture. Mix well with wooden spoon.

Spoon into loaf tin and bake for 45-50 minutes till cooked when tested with a skewer.

Rest and cool before removing from tin.
